St Gregory & St Martin - Wye

Wye Parish Church is a vibrant community of people of all ages from the village and further afield. Well over 150 people worship with us on Sundays, including an increasing number of young families. The worship is mostly formal, and led by our splendid choir, but we also offer an 8.00 am Book of Common Prayer said Holy Communion every Sunday, and a morning Family Service and evening informal Celebration Service each month. We also meet each weekday morning to say Morning Prayer.

Hospitality and welcoming visitors and newcomers matter to us. We serve coffee at the end of every Sunday Morning Service and at other special events throughout the year. We host Sunday lunches in the Village Hall from time to time: most recently over 200 people from across the benefice enjoyed a hot lunch after the Rev’d Ravi Holy´s first service.

The Parish Church of St Gregory & St Martin, Wye, is an interesting mixture: a fine perpendicular nave with older, 13th century arcading, and an unusual early eighteenth century Chancel and massive tower. In 1447 John Kempe (a local man who subsequently became Archbishop of Canterbury and Chancellor of England) rebuilt and extended the church and also founded a theological college next door. (Wye College sadly closed in 2009 after a century as a highly regarded agricultural college). But in the late seventeenth century the central tower of the church collapsed, taking with it the entire Chancel and both transepts. Our predecessors built their replacement tower firmly on the ground, and chose a much smaller chancel in the style of the time.

The Church is open during daylight hours, and is well used by residents and visitors.
