A Short History of The United Wye Benefice

Working together

The parishes of Wye and Brook have been joined for many years. When in 2000 the 'Stone Street Group' of eight parishes was reorganised we welcomed Hastingleigh into the Wye Benefice. In 2005 Boughton Aluph asked to join us when pastoral reorganisation dissolved their benefice, and Hinxhill followed suit in 2007.

When Elmsted, Petham and Waltham became vacant in 2008 (three more of the original Stone Street Group) they elected to join the United Wye Benefice as part of an 'up the hill' cluster with Hastingleigh.

Our benefice of eight parishes is therefore quite new, although we have been working together informally for some time.

When it became apparent in the course of 2008 that the closure of Wye College would mean we would lose the use of college's facilities - notably the college chapel, our Benefice Office and meeting space- the Wye Methodist Church offered us a home. Our Benefice Office moved to the Vestry in June and we now hold most of our meetings in their complex.
